The Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tacoma are great trucks and both will serve you great for your light duty trucky needs, but which one to buy? Fortunately Insideline can help out with a head to head that, even after a decade, is actually still current.
So without further adieu, I present from the world of 4x3 TV, a comparison between the 2014 2005 Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tacoma.
Seriously, can you believe its been almost 10 model years since these were new? and they really haven't changed.

2015 will serve you better i suspect.
can't wait for the canyon
might die

no joke, I'm totally smitten by it.

if it can break 26 mpg in the v6 i will own one eventually.
a full 4 door crew cab with v6 and 4x4. it'll be in 5 years or so. but if it can crack 26, preferably 28 IT WILL BE MINE EVENTUALLY

If I didn't have to get a new car before next winter, the RWD 4Runner was fun in the snow (every morning driving to work was like a rally stage lol) but not the safest. I would be getting a diesel Canyon instead of either ST.

Ram Ecodiesel?
![]() 05/07/2014 at 16:56 |

They legitimately look exactly the same. Ten years hasn't changed them a bit.

I'm not really a fan of diesels. I like to do maintenance and as much of the mechanical work as I am capable of myself. And there's a high entry cost to diesel, and a higher fuel cost. One person on here one day did all the math for me but it's difficult because diesel fuel can't go past a certain cost per gallon or it's not worth it.
And I would rather have a light truck, also the Canyon is going to be diesel in 2016 I think so we'll see if that one has such crazy numbers that I can't deny the diesel lol

not even a little.

haha, like I just said to someone else who said Ram EcoDiesel? I am not a big diesel person, and the cost of diesel fuel has to stay low enough to make it worth while, more expensive to buy and I believe to maintain.
If the canyon is getting like 37 mpg or something with a diesel I don't know that I'll be able to say no though lol

I can understand that. Plus, it is probably a good idea to wait and see how long the VM lasts in the Ram.

It has a lot of active aero and weighs 4000lbs (about the same as the Lacrosse with the same engine), I got 31-33mpg at 65mph in my mom's Lacrosse when I drove it to the cottage last summer.
I'm buying the same truck with the specs you mentioned this fall. Cannot wait.

what's 65 mph?! lol
My morning commute normally hovers in the high 70s. Which would probably work great I would imagine a drop of 3-4 MPG for the higher speed, and I can put a tonneau cover on the back for some aero and be in the high 20s and smile driving that truck.
I expect a full report when you buy it, even test drive it. It's killing me they don't have a build and price online yet giving it's supposed to be on lots this fall!
I WANNA PLAY WITH YOUR TRUCK GMC, COME ON
Oh and the chevy doesn't look nearly as cool

Yeah, I think a lot of these EcoDiesel guys jumped onto a 28 mpg bandwagon and honestly we don't know if it can even pull that in real life conditions yet.
We'll see how the reviews are on it!

I know I'm eagerly waiting for the online configurator and pricing.
And I will have plenty of pictures and half-assed review up on Oppo after my first test drive.
Haha agreed, the Chevy Colorado is like the Malibu version of the truck. Big Red (am I the only one who for some reason thinks that GMC nic name?) has a midsize truck that looks like a truck. The Chevy counterpart looks more like a 'lifestyle' truck, whatever that means lol.

no I think you're right on all points, and I like the nick name lol.
my dad being a GMC and nebraska football fan would love it!
I just always think the GMC brings a little more hard edge to the game. I don't mind the look of the Colorado, it's not bad. But the GMC is frickin awesome.
Oh and i bet it would be awesome with a 2 inch lift and some nice A/T tires! (so much for my mileage). In all honesty I miss my old S10 blazer's capabilities. It'll be nice to be able to run stuff over and not stress about snow once i get one of these in the future

2" lift and and inch offset on each side would be sweet. like the ZR2 package for the S10 and Blazer (i think those were 3" lift and 3" wider - 1.5 each side).
At the very least I'm going to put a leveling kit on it.
My thoughts: Cayon- crew cab, 4x4 with auto transfer case and auto locking G80 rear diff (which likely means All Terrain package), leather interior, 3.6L. I know it can be optioned with a spray-in bed liner but I'll like go with LineX and have the wheel wells sprayed too. An intake helps that 3.6L on the cars it's in, so likely a Volant intake for it too. Also going to black out most of the chrome trim (PlastiDip ftw).
![]() 05/08/2014 at 10:50 |

All of that sounds awesome. I would prefer a cloth interior, dog and kids lol, but a level kit is a much more logical/functional route to take. Bed/wheel liners is smart to keep out the salt that I'd be slushing through. Intake is an easy enough upgrade. I'm a little disapointed in the lack of a blue color option (i like blue trucks lol) but the black looks great, and the green might be nice in person

Honestly, with the right patience, I'm sure you could get over the EPA ratings. There are guys running Cummins 4x4 getting in the mid-20's. I was talking about long term maintenance/reliability.
![]() 05/08/2014 at 13:37 |

yea that too, i know nothing about VM motors.
patience when my right foot is concerned is not my strong suit either btw lol

They've been around for a while. With the theme of heavy feet, I hate hopping in someone else's car after driving mine. Mine you have to give 10/10th's to get to speed.

Hahaha, Thats why I hate getting in my wife's Jeep Commander.
Her's is the little 3.7L V6 in that giant SUV. Decent torque but man it's got a lot to move. It's a definite FLOOR IT for highway entrance ramps.
I get in my 07 Milan (V6) and floor it onto the highway I realize I'm doing 90 at the top of the ramp! And I won't even get started on how easy it is to accelerate in the 68 Montego.
![]() 05/08/2014 at 16:27 |

The 3.7 isn't as bad in a regular cab Ram, especially when not backed by a slushbox, but it definitely isn't my Mom's Vibe GT or our old Trailblazer.
![]() 05/09/2014 at 10:07 |

the 3.7L worked great for the Jeep Liberty she had before the Commander. It's just too big/heavy of a vehicle for it I think.
It doesn't bother her and it's her DD so it doesn't matter. I rarely drive it so no big deal, especially because I warned her about it in the test drive and she thought it was fine.
Then again she's a wimp and won't even drive the Montego...
![]() 05/09/2014 at 11:45 |

Yeah, it's a bit underpowered in the Ram, but the only way you can tell is because of the gas mileage.
![]() 05/09/2014 at 11:51 |

lol what gas mileage!
![]() 05/09/2014 at 12:25 |

It's still a Prius compared to my 4Runner.
![]() 05/09/2014 at 12:46 |

Hahaha, I bet your 4Runner is a Prius compared to me 68 Montego!
![]() 05/09/2014 at 13:00 |

Usually, it's between 9-12 Mpg, but I have averaged 2 on a tank.

that's probably around where I am haha, imagine if I had a bigger V8? It's only a 302

Funny enough, mine would be closer to twenty with a 1UZ swap.
